Vocab Sort/Categorize
- Give students the vocab words for a unit (best if they are already familiar with the definitions)
- Ask them to group the words into 3-5 categories, but each category MUST have at least 3 words in it
- Have them explain/defend why they grouped those words together - helps them see the relationships/connections between words
- Has them practice higher-order thinking by defending their placements
2
Vocab Intro
- Give students the vocab words for a unit and ask them to place in one of three columns:
- Don’t Know the Definition
- Might Know the Definition
- Definitely Know the Definition
- Then discuss the words as a class or in small groups with those who know the definition sharing their definitions
- Students can move words to different columns if they feel comfortable with knowing the definition
3
Flashcards
- Have students make flashcards with the definitions on them (can be done with or without technology) Quizlet is a good way to do this with technology. https://quizlet.com/
- Students could also draw or take a picture to represent the word.
- Having them use their SnapChat for this would make it relevant to their social lives
- They would have to take a picture or "video" relevant to the word and label that SnapChat with the vocab word
- They would have to take a picture or "video" relevant to the word and label that SnapChat with the vocab word
